How to Make a Healthy Paleo Breakfast for Kids

Most of the breakfast items that are marketed toward parents and children for busy mornings are high in carbs, overly processed and contain sugar and artificial food dyes. That’s not how I want my kids to start their morning, but I don’t have time to make a sit-down breakfast during the week.

I’ve been working on cutting out the processed foods and sugar from my diet for a while by following the Paleo diet. The rest of my family isn’t eating Paleo, but when I can I make Paleo meals that everyone will enjoy like this healthy Paleo breakfast for kids.

If you’re following the Paleo diet, you’ll know that it does not include: grains, sugar, dairy, processed foods, beans and a few other things. The goal is healthy, whole ingredients that haven’t been processed or are very minimally processed.  This rules out breakfast pastries, frozen waffles, brightly colored children’s cereals, etc. for breakfast.

Saving Time

One of the keys to making a healthy paleo breakfast for kids when you’re short on time is preparation. If you don’t think about what you and the kids will have for breakfast the night before, it’s more likely that you’ll fall back on less healthy choices.

One of the most popular breakfast in my house is eggs and fruit. When I’m pressed for time, I make up a batch of hard boiled eggs the night before and use those instead of fried or poached eggs.

Depending on the time of year, I add a bowl of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries or I add a sliced apple with almond butter or a clementine.

Changing how you eat can be a challenge, but I prefer to look at it as an adventure. Try making simple, healthy changes to your diet rather than announcing a drastic change to your family overnight.

If you have younger kids that may not understand the idea of Paleo eating – or that may be resistant to change, it may be useful to use the Croods as imagery for how you are trying to eat.  They wouldn’t have walked into the grocery store and grabbed a package of frozen waffles for breakfast.

They would have chosen healthy, natural foods like eggs, fruits and nuts for breakfast. Finally, here are a few more easy Paleo recipes to try.
