Healthy Home Tips and a Resolution

Last Updated on January 26, 2023 by Ellen Christian

As I look back on a year that is almost ending, I have started thinking about my resolution for next year. I do not make a lot of resolutions. Some years I make none at all.  This year has been a whirlwind of activity and has brought with it a few changes in my life both personally and professionally.  I find that I am much busier this year than last and that’s both a good and bad thing. It’s good because I’m finally doing a number of things that I have wanted to but it’s bad because I have been taking short cuts in my home life to do it.

Healthy Home Tips

I realize that I relied on take out and processed foods much more than I feel comfortable with this past year because I was too busy to cook.  This resulted in me putting on ten pounds (ok 12) and giving up on exercise.  My garden was sadly neglected and because of that produced much less than I wanted it to.  My exercise bike gathered dust because I was too tired at the end of the day to exercise.  I drank way too many Diet Cokes and coffees to stay awake and get everything I wanted to get done which has affected my health and brought back some of my immune disorder problems.

For the past month, I have been working on balance so I can regain my healthy home again.  I’m sharing these healthy tips that are working for me.  If you’re struggling with the same problem, I hope that they’ll work for you. This post has been sponsored by Filtrete but all opinions are my own.

  • Make a menu plan & refer to it when you shop.  5pm is not the time to realize you have no clue what you’re making for dinner and nothing defrosted you could cook even if you did.  Aim for healthy meals made from fresh foods and ditch the boxes, mixes and helpers.

  • Use your slow cooker.  Even I can toss some frozen chicken, carrots and parsnip in the slow cooker at 6am for dinner tonight. In 5 minutes, you can have a healthy dinner taken care of for your family after work.
  • Take a look at your cleaners.  Healthy cleaners work just as well as cleaners with toxic chemicals.  Glance at the ingredients in your cleaning products before you put them in your cart.  If you have 5 minutes, you can mix up many healthy cleaners based on vinegar and water.
  • Take care of yourself so that you can take care of your family.  If you are sick, over tired and stressed out, you will not be able to take care of your family.  Make sure you take your vitamins, get enough sleep and allow yourself enough “me time” to unwind at the end of the day.
  • Take baby steps to achieve your goals.  Rome wasn’t built in a day and you will be more successful if you make small permanent changes rather than trying to change everything overnight.
  • Start by remembering to change your furnace filter to help remove allergens and small particles like bacteria and virus from your home.

Ideal for allergens and small particles like bacteria and virus, the Filtrete Healthy Living Filter (MPR1900) captures up to 93 percent of large airborne particles, such as household dust, pollen, mold spores and dust mite debris, from the air passing through the filter.  It captures 4X times more microscopic particles, such as smoke, smog, pet dander and particles that can carry bacteria and viruses, than ordinary pleated filters  It last up to three months and you can find them at Lowe’s, Target, Walmart, Costco and your local hardware store; find a location near you by visiting FindMyFiltreteFilter.com.

  1. I learned that I probably need to run out and buy the Allergen Defense filter here: http://www.filtrete.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/FiltreteNA/Filtrete/Products/?N=4315+3294573952+3294529207&rt=rud ... I think it might help my son with his asthma. Thanks for the chance to win!

  2. I learned that Fiberglass filters were originally developed to protect your furnace and/or air conditioning system. They were not intended to significantly improve your indoor air quality. Filtrete filters were created to both protect your furnace equipment AND clean the air you breathe.
