Simple Fleece Sewing Projects

Last Updated on November 29, 2022 by Ellen Christian

When my children were little, I enjoyed making fleece sewing projects for them because fleece is an easier medium to work with than fabric for a beginner.  Fleece is also soft, warm, easy to wash and comfortable which are all ideal for small children.  There’s no need to sew hems like there is with fabric because fleece does not unravel at the end.

Fleece Sewing Projects

There are many types of fleece projects from blankets to hats to sweaters to dog beds. I’ve even included a few no sew fleece projects for those that want something quick and easy. These fleece sewing projects would be perfect for Christmas. It’s never too early to start making a few handmade gifts.

How to Choose Fleece

When choosing fleece for a project, it’s important to remember that fleece is not the same as felt. Fleece is a knitted fabric. It tends to be lightweight so the wind will blow through it. Be sure to choose a heavier weight of fleece for this reason. The fibers of the fleece material should stand up from the core of the fabric and not be matted or pressed down.

Prewashing

Unlike some types of fabrics, fleece fabric will not shrink or lose its shape when you wash it. That means there is no need to prewash fleece before sewing with it. It also does not need to be ironed since it’s very resistant to wrinkling. Ironing fleece can actually press down the fibers so it isn’t recommended. It can be difficult to tell whether or not the fabric will fleece so be sure to run your hand over it vigorously before you buy it to see if pilling begins.

Care of Fabric

Once your project is complete, if it needs to be laundered, it’s recommended that you wash fleece separately. It can pill and collect fuzz and lint from other types of fabric like towels or socks. Wash the fleece item in cold or lukewarm water and lay flat to dry. Avoid putting the item in the dryer on high heat.

Fabric Scraps

If you find yourself with fleece fabric scraps, be sure to hold onto them. If you’re wondering what to do with leftover fleece, there are a lot of cute projects. I generally use mine in place of batting when stuffing pillows. Very small pieces can be left outside and the birds will gather them up to use in their nest.

  1. I love fleece! I have made cage covers with it for my sugar gliders and a no sew fleece blanket for my granddaughter.
