Easy Green Changes for Earth Day to be More Eco-Friendly

Last Updated on August 14, 2020 by Ellen Christian

Are you wondering about easy green changes for Earth Day? Years ago, I never gave much thought to going green or making earth-friendly choices. It isn’t that I didn’t care. It’s simply that it never really occurred to me that our resources were finite and that the choices I made had a real impact on the environment. Ever since then I’ve been trying to incorporate eco-friendly living tips into my blog posts and my life.

Easy Green Changes for Earth Day

If going green is a new concept for you, it’s easiest to be with simple green changes. There are a lot of different ways to go green. Some are easy things that you can do yourself with the kids. Some are more complicated and may require a contractor or outside help. It’s easy to become overwhelmed so I always recommend making baby steps. Earth Day is the perfect time to start.

LED Lightbulbs

Change your light bulbs to a more energy efficient option like LED light bulbs. They last longer and use less electricity. This means fewer bulbs are used and disposed of and less electricity needs to be generated.

Start recycling

Start recycling or begin recycling more things than you do now. Recycling stops things from ending up in the landfill and it means that fewer resources need to be used to create something new. Cardboard, newspaper, glass plastic, aluminum, and paperboard may be able to be recycled in your area. Check with the facilities in your area to find out exactly what you can recycle.

Grow a garden

Growing your own herbs and vegetables allows you to grow them without chemicals. It also cuts down on transportation from the farmers to the grocery store for food that you buy. Another option is to buy local which also cuts down on transportation. Make sure that you work on eliminating things like produce waste.

Donate rather than throw away

If you have items that are perfectly good but that you have no need for any longer, consider donating them to a charity or thrift store. Our library takes book donations. Homeless shelters and battered women’s shelters will often take donations as well. This keeps things out of the landfill.

Eliminate disposables

Can you use a real plate instead of a paper plate? Can you use a refillable water bottle rather than buy bottled water at the store? Every disposable you toss has the potential to fill up our landfill. Check out the tips to reduce plastics in this post.

Drive fewer miles

Take a bus, carpool, ride your bike or walk instead of driving. The fewer cars on the road, the fewer emissions are being released into the environment.

Buy responsibly

Purchase products from environmentally conscious companies. Use your shopping dollars to support companies that make good choices. It’s one of the easiest ways to let brands know what’s important to you.
