Crockpot Flan Recipe

I love flan but I have always made it in the oven.  A crockpot flan recipe means that I can start it during the day in the crockpot and it will be ready at night when I want dessert.

Getting dinner ready on the table can be hectic enough some nights and when that’s the case, dessert in the crockpot is a great choice.   You won’t believe how easy it is to make this slow cooker flan.

I found this crockpot flan recipe in a cookbook called Slow Cooker Desserts by Jonnie Downing. Sharing with permission.

I love simple desserts and simple desserts in my Crockpot are even better! This is definitely one of my favorite sweet treats.

It’s fancy enough for company or a special evening like Valentine’s Day. But, it’s easy enough to make or a regular weekday meal if you want.

I recommend making them the day before and letting them cool. Then remove them from the ramekins right before you serve them.

How long does flan take to set in the fridge?

You don’t need to refrigerate this crockpot flan recipe to set. It comes out of the mold already set after it has cooled.

If you prefer to eat your flan cold rather than warm, refrigerate your flan for at least two hours or overnight.

What are the main ingredients in flan?

The one ingredient that all flan recipes have in common is eggs. Most recipes will also use milk or sweetened condensed milk like this slow cooker flan.

And, of course, you will want some sort of sugar for the sauce on top. That’s why this crockpot flan has a caramel sauce.

Is flan a custard?

Yes, you’ve guessed it. Flan is a custard dish with a caramel sauce. You can bake it in a ramekin, flan mold, or a flan pan.

Although, I have seen some flan dishes that are baked in larger dishes as well. Flan is also known as creme caramel.

So, what’s the difference between flan and egg custard? Egg custard is typically eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla.

A flan is these same ingredients but also has a caramel sauce baked on the bottom that becomes a topping when the flan is removed from the ramekin or mold.

How do I know if my flan is cooked?

You want this crockpot flan to be light brown in color and slightly firm to the touch but not solid. If it’s solid, you have overcooked it.

So, if it is not firm, cook it longer. If you insert a blade into the center of the flan, it should come out clean.

What is a flan pan?

So, I used a ramekin to make my slow cooker flan recipe. It was relatively easy to use. But, it would probably have been easier if I had used a flan pan or mold instead.

A flan pan is a round, shallow pan that has a raised area in the middle of the pan. That way, when you invert the flan, the edges are raised around the flan.

This way you can top it with your favorite fruit topping and won’t roll off the top. If you want to try this crockpot flan recipe in a flan mold, you can find one on Amazon

Tips for making crockpot flan

You really need to make sure that you oil the sides of the ramekin so that the flan doesn’t stick to the sides when you remove it. You can add fresh berries to the top or you can sprinkle one fresh coconut or chocolate shavings if you prefer.

And, you may find it easier to use a flan mold instead of a ramekin. Either way, grease it well to avoid sticking.

This crockpot flan recipe is an easy way to use up too many eggs. Everyone gets tired of eggs for breakfast and egg salad for dinner.

But, no one gets tired of this delicious, decadent dessert in my home. So, you can check out the easy recipe below.

Prep Time 25 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours
Total Time 4 hours 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Warm a small saucepan on the stove over medium heat and then pour in 1 cup sugar. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and browns. Remove from the heat and spoon 3 tablespoons liquid caramel into each of 4 ramekins. Gently rotate the ramekins until the caramel coats the sides. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the condensed and whole milk, the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and the vanilla, whisking to mix thoroughly. To produce an extra smooth flan, strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine mesh wire strainer. Pour over the caramel in the ramekins.
  3. Set the ramekins in the slow cooker. Carefully pour in hot water to surround them, but not enough that any will get into the ramekins. Cover and cook on high for four hours. Carefully lift out the flans and let them cool on trivets or a wire rack for at least one hour.
  4. To serve, run a knife around the edge of each ramekin and flip the chilled flans upside down into individual serving plates.

  1. I recently made flan...twice. We're kind of hooked on flan currently and I might just have to give it a try in the crock pot! My only problem...I need more of it for my family of 7! :)

      • May I ask what size slow cooker you used? Mine is a 5 1/2 quart oval, and I worry that recipes like this one are meant to be made in a smaller crock. Thanks again.

        • Mine is a 6 quart slow cooker. The recipe didn't specify a size but I don't think a smaller one would fit the ramekins inside. This worked well but I would check it for doneness just to be safe.
