Last Updated on September 18, 2022 by Ellen Christian

Have you ever tried to get a close shave without razor burn irritation? If you’re like me, you usually end up with a red, irritated, bumpy rash on your legs. That’s definitely not the look you were hoping for. As someone with very sensitive skin, I seem to be more prone to razor burn than my friends. And, if I’m not careful, my skin becomes dry and irritated throughout the summer.

How to Get a Close Shave Without Razor Burn Irritation

Close Shave Without Razor Burn

I’ll admit on the very worst days, I’m tempted to not shave at all. But, that’s just not a look I’m comfortable with. So, I do my best to get a close shave without razor burn by following these simple steps. Why not learn how to make your own shaving cream.

Exfoliate First

The first thing I do when I get into the tub is to exfoliate my legs using a loofah. Exfoliation helps to eliminate dead skin cells which will give you a closer shave. You can achieve the same result using a homemade sugar scrub on your legs with a washcloth.

Warm Soak

I prefer a warm soak in a bubble bath over a quick shower. But, either way, make sure that you soak your legs in warm water before you shave. This helps your pores open up which will help prevent razor burn irritation. Remember, never dry shave if you have sensitive skin. Why not try this homemade bath soak.

Fresh Blade

Using a blade that is dull or hasn’t bee cleaned properly is one of the causes of razor burn irritation. Make sure that you always use a fresh blade when you have. If you do need to reuse a razor that you’ve used previously, make sure that it has been thoroughly cleaned first. Check out a few of these electric shaving tips.

Moisturize

Using a shaving cream or gel can help prevent irritation for those with sensitive skin. Look for one that is fragrance-free and contains aloe vera gel. Or, if you are out of shaving cream, coconut oil works quite well as a natural shaving cream. Just be careful as it will leave the bottom of your tub slippery.

Pat Dry

After you get out of the tub, make sure that you pat your legs dry rather than rubbing them with a towel. Rubbing can irritate your wet skin and cause irritation. Patting will remove the water without irritation.

No matter how careful you are, you may end up with the occasional nick or cut. There is a new product available that will help you deal with cuts and nicks from shaving.
