Ever since Marty hurt his back years ago, we’ve had to deal with regular, monthly prescriptions. When you add in prescriptions for my daughter and I for our asthma, we have about a dozen prescriptions we fill every single month. There’s nothing that can impact your budget more than a dozen prescriptions, and I notice it even more at the holidays when we have other things we’d rather spend our money on. Tips for Saving Money on Prescriptions

Tips for Saving Money on Prescriptions

What we pay for prescriptions varies based on what time of the year it is because we have deductibles to hit before insurance kicks in. At the beginning of the year, we spend much more on our prescriptions because we haven’t hit the deductible yet. There are also a few prescriptions Marty takes that his insurance won’t cover at all. When this happens, we follow these tips for saving money on prescriptions to keep expenses down.

Ask for Samples

When we visit the doctor, we always make sure to ask if there are samples available for any of our medications. Sometimes the doctor can share samples that amount to the first refill of our prescriptions. Other times, especially for medication that has been around for a while, this isn’t possible.

Get a Generic

Some of the medication we take is available in generic form. When that’s the case, we always ask for generic because they cost much less than name brand medication. There are a few prescriptions we fill that aren’t available as generics so we have to get name brand. But, when we can we try to save this way.

Get Multiple Months

With our asthma inhalers, we can refill one month at a time or we can refill three months at a time for the exact same price. It only makes sense to refill for three months when we have this option. Check with your pharmacy to see if this is possible for you.

Use ScriptSave WellRx

ScriptSave WellRx is an app that can help save money on prescription medications for the entire family. Using the app, you can search for the best discount at pharmacies near you or near any location before you fill your prescription. All you need to do is download the app, search for a drug name and then compare prices. Your pharmacist can tell you what it would cost using your insurance and you can compare that to the price you’d get using ScriptSave WellRx. It’s especially helpful for people with high out of pocket prescription costs. Make sure that you check prices before every prescription refill because prices change regularly.

How to be Inspired by Your Cat

You cannot use your insurance and ScriptSave WellRx at the same time, but you can compare prices between the two or use it during the time you haven’t met your deductible. It’s accepted at over 62,000 pharmacies across the nation. You can even use it on your pet’s prescriptions so if your dog or cat has a monthly prescription and you don’t have pet insurance, this is a great way to potentially save money!

  1. It sure sounds like a great app for folks who have a list of prescriptions to purchase every month. Heaven knows anywhere you can save is a good thing

    • It often astounds people when they come to realize how many folks are impacted by high Rx prices...and, even more so, when we tell them how much prescription prices will vary from week-to-week and pharmacy-to-pharmacy. If our app can help take some of the time & stress out of the process, then we'll be delighted to have helped :)
