Easy Breakfast Ideas: How to Make Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats

Last Updated on May 28, 2022 by Ellen Christian

I’m always looking for easy breakfast ideas. Mornings are one of the most hectic times of day in my home. I am NOT a morning person. About the only thing I want to deal with first thing in the morning is coffee – and a lot of it. Unfortunately, people think that they need to eat in the morning before they head off to work. Since sugar coated breakfast cereal is not on my list of things I want to feed people, I needed to come up with something healthy and easy. I love steel cut oats but they take a long time to cook, and I don’t have that time in the morning. Since I bought my Instant Pot, I wanted to learn how to make Instant Pot steel cut oats.

I’ve had my Instant Pot for about a month and I am so glad I bought it. It’s such a huge time saver. For those that aren’t familiar with it, an Instant Pot is a programmable pressure cooker. I got the Bluetooth Enabled Instant Pot (Instant Pot Smart) so I can monitor it when I’m working and so it can send me notifications on my iPhone – but basically because it’s fun to play with. From the app on my iPhone, I can check the temperature and the pressure and see how long it has to finish.

I played around with this recipe a bit using ingredients I had on hand. You could easily change the fruit and nuts to whatever flavor combination you enjoy. I use maple syrup for a sweetener because it comes from the trees in our back yard, but if you prefer you could use honey or stevia. Try to stay away from the processed sugars.

  1. Can these recipes be used for another brand of "Insta Pot". I have a different Brand. Just curious! And it is not called an Insta Pot.

    • I only have the Instant Pot so I haven't tried other brands. But it cannot hurt to follow the directions and see!

  2. I made this as the first recipe with my new instant pot, followed the directions exactly and it scorched on the bottom. If I make it again, I think I would do it in a separate bowl on the rack. Since no pressure level was indicated, I went with the default High pressure. Should I have used Low pressure instead? And should I have released the pressure quickly instead of waiting with natural release? Maybe that extra waiting time was what caused the scorching/burning on the bottom. I had to throw out about 1/3 of the recipe.

    • I used high when I did it but I vented the pressure immediately. There was some scorching but that's fairly common with things that are very liquid dense from what I've seen.

  3. I'm still debating with myself over whether I prefer instant pot oatmeal or overnight ones. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

    • I like the overnight oats when I'm using traditional oatmeal because it's easy with very limited clean up. When I'm doing steel cut oats, nothing beets the Instant Pot in my opinion.

  4. Can you believe I found steel cut oats on sale at Sprouts for 50 cents a pound this week?! I'm stocking up for sure. I will do the overnight oats since I don't have an Instant Pot...yet. Looks like a great item to get though. I've never had a pressure cooker but would love one.

  5. Yum! I've wanted to try these slow cooker oatmeal recipes but I haven't gotten around to it. I'm still on the instant which is good, not great. These are so much more custom though. Thanks for sharing!
